In my previous career I was a computer programmer. Perhaps thankfully I often surprised people when I told them, as I don’t match the stereotypical view of a programmer and I rarely talked ‘geek’ when not working. When I was able to make photography my profession I went from a job where the most exercise seemed to be plugging in a monitor to a job which is perhaps surprisingly physical. I didn’t realise quite how physical it was until I tried to stand up the day after a particularly busy toddler group. It took me a few moments to realise that the aching legs I had were due to two hours of standing, kneeling, crouching, lying down and moving between all positions quickly to capture the children’s photos as they jumped around, as well as moving the studio equipment into the hall the toddler group ran in. I still get my ‘computer time’ when processing the photos, but I now also get some more active time when taking the photos, so perhaps I can postpone that gym membership a bit longer.

Photographing children – a physical job?
